The Dark Night

Ok, we were probably the last people on earth to see this movie but at least we got to see it last night.

I was completely blown away. You know when you hear all these good things about a movie and you finally see it and it`s a huge let down? I was so scared that that would be the case. The reviews have been awesome and I have heard nothing negative about it. The hype surrounding it has been incredible and rightly so, it turned out.

Last night we finally got the dvd and we were both blown away. Probably the coolest, edgiest, most awesome movie I have seen the last year. I loved the fact that it was such a dark, edgy, no holds barred movie. No other Batman movie could compare and truth be told, I had grown a bit tired of the genre. The Dark Night changed all of that.

A lot has been said about Heath Ledger and the tragic circumstances surrounding his untimely death. I don`t want to go there but I do want to say that his performance was startlingly good. A career defining performance which makes the whole situation terribly sad. His Joker was probably the coolest villain in recent memory. The Oscar and Golden Globe buzz surely has something to it.

Heath Ledger was not the only good performance though. The cast was magnificent and I especially enjoyed Morgan Freeman`s Lucius. But then again, I have always been a Morgan Freeman fan, or at least from the first time I saw him in Glory (which still rates as one of my all-time favourite films). Mention must also go to Michael Caine, who`s portrayal of Alfred was really cool.

Of course Hayley loves Christian Bale and for my money he is the coolest of all the Batman`s. I thiunk we like him for different reasons though...

I truly rate this movie as one of the best I have seen and I`m already thinking of watching it again, soon.

Right on! I was also worried about the hype, but since I saw it when it came out, it was more the Ledger hype that bothered me. Couple scenes into the movie though, and it's undeniable - that's seriously amazing acting. I actually felt a bit scared of him at one or two points, and I'm not easily taken in by a scary character, I just laugh. If you ever get a chance to see it on an IMAX screen though, it's absolutely worth it. Some of the scenes were shot specifically for IMAX and it's just so encompassing. One of my favourite movies for 2008, and one of the best I've ever seen.

Also, the script and the whole concept was incredible, all these little nuances and storylines you get to follow - I'd even say the movie was pretty deep. Some people thought it was too long but I think it was perfect - I saw it twice.

NESSIE!!!!!!!! Whoohooo! Happy New Year my friend!

I would have loved to have seen the Imax version. I read on Wikipedia that the first scene involving the Joker was shot using Imax cameras. I can only imagine how awesome that must have been! I have been looking for a Blu ray version but none of the dvd shops stock them.

Anyways, so nice to see you again and looking forward to lots of chats this year!

All the best and Peace!

Oh yeah! This movie was fantastic. I heart batman <3 lol but seriously...Heath Ledger did such an amazing amazing job. And the thing is...nobody is saying this just because he died...its true! He was that good! It is a real shame that he passed away so young...

I watched The Professional the other day. Have you seen it? It is such a good movie.(an older movie) The acting of the vilian is unvelievable! I would highly recomend it.

Yep - it was an amazing film. I re-watched it on my vacation last week - and the joker was absolutely crazy/freaky!

Hey Heather! Excellent point. Hayley and I discussed that exact thing this morning. Did Heath`s death influence our opinion of his performance? The answer is an unequivical NO! He was incredible and I think Kevin and Nessie`s comments are further proof that it was just a truly amazing cinematic thing. I thought it would be good but that was mind blowingly good.

Kevin, I`m gonna try to get hold of a Blu ray copy and once I do, I`m gonna watch it again, for sure.

Good girl, thanks for stopping by and I appreciate the cool comment.

Nessie, I was also worried about the length at first but it absolutely flew by! Still disappointed at missing the Imax thing though...

Heather, The Professional is one of my favourite movies of all time! It was Natalie Portman`s first film and that performance is still the best of any child actor, as far as I`m concerned.
Jean Reno was the "villain" and it was a heartbreaking performance, man he was awesome. The real villain, Gary Oldman, also starred in the Dark Night as Gordon. How cool????

Ok, I feel like a real movie geek now....

I didnt take notice to the fact that Gary Oldman was in the Dark Knight and The Professional. How about that! And I am so glad that you know what Im talking about. I have been raving about that movie and nobody else has seen it.

Natalie Portman did a wonderful job. Especially for being so young and such an intense movie.

You do have a good knowledge of movie trivia! You'd be good at Scene It

Francois, you're not alone. I finally saw it a couple of weeks ago, and agree with you totally -- there was nothing about the movie I didn't like!

Heather, we`re more interested in Wii Monopoly! Since you`re post Hayley and I have been fascinated!

Hey Darryl! Happy New Year my man! Glad we`re not the only ones who missed it in the cinemas!

I was just like you, Francois: concerned that it had been over-hyped.

My reaction to it was (and still is) this: one of the best films I've ever watched. It's moving and haunting.

I'd agree with your review 100%!
